Are you sure the state gave him a fire arms / foid card?

That would make IL look pretty bad if he got past the background check after being a felon.

Martin received an Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card in January 2014. Two months later, Martin legally purchased a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun, apparently the same weapon used in Friday’s shooting. That’s despite a 1995 conviction in Mississippi for aggravated assault. Records indicate Martin served less than two years in prison.

“You don’t need fingerprints to purchase a firearm,” Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman said Saturday.

After receiving an FOID card in 2014, police said, Martin was fingerprinted when applying for a concealed carry permit. During the fingerprinting and background process, authorities discovered the 1995 aggravated assault conviction and revoked Martin’s FOID card.

Procedure dictates Illinois State Police would have sent a letter to Martin notifying him that his FOID card was revoked. A copy of the letter should have also been sent to Aurora police, since that’s where Martin was living. However, it appears neither Aurora nor state police attempted to confiscate Martin’s gun.

This incident was a classic example for why everyone should have a gun. The bad guys can be stopped early in their shooting sprees.

We have more than enough gun laws in this state. Too many in my opinion. The problem is not a lack of legislation. The problem is legislation that is not enforced. This event is proof of that concept. Democrats are already calling for tougher gun laws that, by definition, will only affect law abiding citizens. More laws would not have changed anything. Police knew this guy was a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Instead of arresting him they sent him a letter asking him to obey the law and turn in his gun. He didn't. Who could have guessed that a convicted felon would not obey the law? I can see how that would be confusing. So obviously the answer is to pass legislation that takes guns away from law abiding citizens. Way to go democrats. Way to go.

Thanks for the info. It looks like gun laws weren't being properly enforced. Maybe there should be a better state-to-state system?
