Afghan leader tells US audience that Taliban not winning war

president of Afghanistan told a U.S. audience Monday that his country is not losing the war to the Taliban and is not at risk of collapse amid escalating attacks by the militant group and an expansion of the territory it controls. President Ashraf Ghani said his administration is intent on seeking a negotiated peace with the Taliban, which have shown no interest in direct talks with a government they see as illegitimate. "The Taliban are not in a winning position," Ghani said by video to an audience at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington as a suicide bombing in Kabul and a deadly militant assault on districts in eastern Afghanistan suggested government control was slipping further.

According to Ashraf Ghani Afghanistan Taliban is not winning the war. Yet the reality on the ground shows that the Taliban are indeed winning the war and had being taking over more provinces in the region.

The Afghanistan Gov has already lost 55 percent of the districts.

Problem is nothing changes especially whos winning and losing. In Afghanistan, there is no win or loss Taliban sends troops into an area. And then the government will send troops they run away. Then when government troops leave back comes to the Taliban. For a war, the actual number of deaths is almost nothing because they don't really fight. More people are killed by terrorists than in combat. Afghans don't fight they fire off a couple of shots then run away. Dont know how many times we were there to back up government troops to find they ran off. So you attack the Taliban and they take off running and your choice is to chase them for 30 clicks or let them go.

This could all be solved by a few strategic nuclear warheads, but I am sure half the world would throw a hissy fit.

*The First Anglo-Afghan War ended in Britain's greatest military humiliation of the nineteenth century. *

"It was a sharp-eyed young officer on the walls of Jalalabad who saw him first, slowly riding a bedraggled and exhausted pony across the barren plain at the foot of the high mountain passes of Afghanistan.

When a rescue party reached him, they found a shadow of a man, his head sliced open, his tattered uniform heavily bloodstained.

He seemed more dead than alive but, when asked ‘Where is the Army?’, Assistant Surgeon William Brydon managed to reply: ‘I am the Army.’

It was January 13, 1842, and the 30-year-old Scot was all that remained of the British force that had invaded Afghanistan three years earlier."
