In an effort to seal Gaza from smuggled weapons, Egypt is offering to supply up to 750 border guards. In addition, it has called upon Syria to reign
in Hamas and other militant groups to prevent them from attacking Israel. In addition to the border guards, Egypt would send some officials to

WASHINGTON - Egypt is offering 750 border guards to seal Gaza from smuggled weapons and is urging Syria to restrain Hamas and other militant groups
from attacking Israel, Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said Tuesday.
We will do whatever is needed on our part," Gheit said before discussing with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice his government's offer to help in
Israel's withdrawal from Gaza.
"We have a lot ahead of us," Rice said at a joint news conference after they met at the State Department. She emphasized that the Palestinians and
Israel had the primary responsibility — the Palestinians to fight terror and Israel to help improve living conditions on the West Bank and in Gaza.

Israel and the Palestinians cannot do it on thier own. This is a good move by Egypt as it caries very little risk, but pays off both physically and
politically. Other nations need to help out if this is going to work. Ideally, if we could get a NATO peacekeeping unit in the region to separate the
two sides would be even better. However, if Syria cannot or will not reign in Hamas or the other groups that it shelters, the talk could collapse very
fast.
