It wasn't like that. The scientists (or technicians) from the IPMA were on board of a trawler as part of a program to minimize unwanted captures by that type of fishing, and they found that one of the fish brought from a depth of 700 metres was of that species, that is not a rare species, they exist all over the Atlantic and Indian oceans and in part of the Pacific.

Actually, no. They've been well known and described in scientific literature since 1884 when the first piece about them was published. The first specimens were brought back to Austria from Japan in 1881. They've been known from physical remains for over 135 years.
