In my opinion, Christopher Nolan is the best filmmaker of this generation, I say filmmaker because he's much more than a director, a mix between Stanely Kubrick, John Carpenter and James Cameron - all respectively the best of their generation. The last great WW2 film was probably Saving Private Ryan, so we are long over due for another one, and considering that Nolan is now at the helm, I'm pretty excited because he never lets me down and always delivers. Ironically, the last time I went to the movies was for Nolan's Interstellar, so I guess it's that time again. Here's some trailer porn for the movie buff's.

He does some good films, that's for sure.
I do question the possible success of this movie though.
Will it have the draw for American audiences being about British troops?
Will it make money in China which is where modern movies can clean up?
I will likely enjoy this movie because it's right up my alley.
Let's hope it's a hit.

It's not going to be his biggest film that's for sure, but I think his name holds a lot of weight and sells pretty well. He only has like 10 films but is in the top 10 grossing of all time. Dark Knight is still one of the biggest films ever.

Well either way, I'm excited to watch this, looks like it's going to be really good.

my only question is...how accurate will it be?

Well it's not a documentary, so fairly accurate is all we can hope for.

This really does look good. I love the cast.

The aerial scenes looked really sharp. I didn't get the CGI feel when looking at it.

I had never heard of this story before, you think it will be fairly accurate?

I had not seen the -accurate- post above... lol Great minds think alike!

Well it's Christopher Nolan, so I'm guessing it will have a surreal atmosphere, have a profound impact and then leave you confused as hell at the end.

Accurate? Who knows, who cares.. just be good

Depends if it ends with a flotilla of American and Chinese ships turning up at the end to save the day.

Nope, it's gonna be Bale and Caine.

The comments by Winston Churchill would sum up the whole thing very effectively. He did observe that the event should not be regarded as a victory, because "wars are not won by evacuations". But it was in the Dunkirk speech that he talked about fighting tyranny "if necessary for years, if necessary alone", and delivered the famous passage about fighting them on the beaches and in the hills. It would be the equivalent of the "I always thought it was a bridge too far" speech in the other well-known film.

It's gonna be great. Nolan directing with Tom hardy. Can't go wrong.
Interstellar and inception are 2 of the best movies of all time

Dark Knight is also one of the greatest movies of all time imo.

Yes it will be hard to fail this movie, but in Nolan I trust.

Just came back from watching Dunkirk. Simply the most intense and suspensful war movie Ive seen. Just WHAM into the movie and I forgot to breath many times. I gotta find an IMAX to watch it again on.

Events will be more or less accurate but expect to be emotionally propagandized. You see the clip of the hospital ship Paris being sunk - if it was being used as a troop transport it was fair game (military purposes). Legitimate target same as any other transport, including civilian vessels.
You can bet that once again the emotional drift will be the evil, barbaric Germans.

We seem to forget it was England who first bombed German cities, it went on for 3 months until London was hit in return. For the next 5 years British bombers would bomb cities by night, often using white phosphorous (killing 1/4 million in Dresden alone) with the American bombers returning by day and bombing the rescuers. By the end of the war nearly every major city lay in ruins. Trains couldn't run, food, fuel and medicines could not be manufactured or delivered condemning many in the labor camps to death. Most of Germany was starving.

Signing surrender didn't end the war though: 600,000 German POWs were used as slave labor by the French while Russia took over a million including civilians to the gulags. 1 in 20 would ever return home.

Russians overrunning Eastern Germany went on killing sprees of civilians and raping every female they could lay hands on. They destroyed everything and everyone in their path.

Eisenhower under the Morgenthau plan circumvented the Geneva convention and simply relabeled German POWs as Disarmed Enemy Forces (DEFs) and placed millions of soldiers in open air barbed wire enclosures where they were left to starve and sleep in the mud and their own excrement until over a million died from our barbaric treatment. The French were little better though the British treated their prisoners ethically.

The idea the Allies could cover up their own war crimes enough to have Eisenhower elected President leaves me with a very sick feeling.

Soviet ethnic cleansing of Germans who had lived for generations in the Ukraine, Romania, Poland and Eastern Germany were forced from their homes, some 11 million of whom about 1.3 million died.

We're still trying to eliminate the German people by the looks of things except France and England are going right down with them. Anglo Saxons are the problem now and 3rd world immigration is taking us right on down the merry road of perpetual debt and fractured societies.

What's one more WW2 flick without human enemies inside the uniforms of the German military?

Wow, I dont even...

At least Dunkirk doesnt give you room to think "DEM EVIL NAZIS" or similar. Its simply a tale of survival and escape. But not once was the enemy demonized as you expect or assume. Its more like a subjective silent war movie with the best SFX Ive experienced in a long time. Get well soon though.

I saw it yesterday, and have to say it was so much better than I expected.
I mean I love The Prestige and Inception especially, and his Batman trilogy is amazing, as was Interstellar (even though a bit too long and depressing).
But Dunkirk is probably his most exciting and heart pounding movie in my view, even if it's tinted with that greyness and dullness that all his other movies have.
The Spitfire scenes and the kids trapped in the boats were especially gut wrenching for me, and hats off to a top Hollywood film that didn't even mention American intervention, or even showed the 'bad guys' faces once.
Also as a Nolan fan, did anyone else spot the Micheal Caine cameo?
