Cisco is not adapting very well to market changes brought about by SD WAN and cloud technologies. AWS, Azure and other cloud service providers offer safe scalable alternatives to IT infrastructure.

Reuters

Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O) forecast current-quarter revenue that widely missed analysts' estimates and said it would cut 1,100 more jobs, as the world's largest networking gear maker steps up efforts to transform into a software-focused company.

Cisco is very slow to adapt to market forces. The security certs such as CCNA-S are finally evolving into something desirable by Cisco professionals.

Revenue in its closely-watched security business, which offers firewall protection and breach detection systems, rose 9 percent to $527 million, but missed analysts' estimate of $545.5 million, according to financial data and analytics firm FactSet Street Account.

For obvious reasons security technology and professionals are quickly becoming the hottest thing in the market.

Cisco, like other legacy technology players, is shifting its focus to high-growth areas such as security, the Internet of Things and cloud computing, amid intense competition from companies such as Huawei and Juniper Networks Inc (JNPR.N).

Hard to believe considering Cisco is only putting 1 billion into R&D. Sounds like it's not that much but believe it or not their closest competitor is investing 2 billion into cloud and SD WAN technology.

I think cloud computing is a dead end biz.

Why would a business want their records sent across the internet, to be scooped up by everyone, then stored on someones server somewhere?

It sounds kinda retarded from a security standpoint.

Don't think I agree with you totally.

Amazon can afford higher quality security services over secure connections and offer more scalability to smaller companies.

Think redundancy and high availability.

Who is more likely to suffer from a DOS attack Amazon or your small company??

The thing with cloud computing is there's no overheads beyond the cloud, you don't need huge dedicated server rooms, you don't need huge servers, you don't need the insurance costs that come with that or the electrical bills or having to hire IT guys who you need to get it up and running and make sure it keeps running.

It's all about money and cloud computing is way way cheaper than physical servers for a great number of business

The advantage of cloud computing is that you want access to vast amount of computing power like animation RenderFarm servers, database servers, or just supercomputing processing nodes all without the hassle of having to maintain the infrastructure onsite (power supplies, UPS, racks, network cables, servers, CPU's, hard disk drives, routers, firewalls, backups, IT support, technicians, air-conditioning, security)

You setup a billing account, connect to a cloud computing system via a VPN and virtual machine software, so the communications are encrypted and you have your own computing environment. Then you use the hardware as needed.

The only other alternatives are relocating to larger premises, or get a server-room-in-a-container which packs all of the above into a 40-ton container, which can be stacked on top of each other and side by side and just need power and network hookups.
