Ebola Like Mystery Illness Kills Eleven in Liberia

Eleven people have died and five are in the hospital, Liberian officials said on Friday, after contracting a mystery illness the World Health Organisation (WHO) said was linked to attendance at the funeral of a religious leader. "We are still investigating. The only thing we have ruled out is ... Ebola," said Liberia's Chief Medical Officer Francis Kateh, adding samples from the victims had been sent abroad for further testing.

It appears that all of the infected had attended a funeral for a religious leader. Samples were taken from the dead bodies and sent for further testing.

WHO and the CDC have taken precautionary measures with hospital staff wearing protective clothing and officials checking with relatives of the ill for signs of the infection.

Symptons include high fever, vomiting and diarreha.

Hopefully this is just an isolated incident and no cause for alarm. It could by anything at this point but there does seem to be some cause for concern.

Other symptons are severe abdominal pain and mental confusion. The Chief Medical Officer Dr. Francis Kateh said the results of the tests will be in sometime this week.

Kateh also told the BBC’s Focus on Africa that further investigations were necessary to identify the disease.

"We are worried... we are all having sleepless nights to make sure we find what is causing the deaths,"he said
