Egypt to host Mid-East summit? (from ATSNN)

The Egyptian Intelligence Chief, Omar Suleiman, gave the invitation to Israel to hold talks within Egypt. Mr Sharon, the leader of Israel has agreed to meet to discuss the possibilty of a summit. As of yet no word has come from Palestinians.

As this is just breaking there is very little news on this as of yet.



Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman in January critisised Israel for being to quick in cutting ties with Abbas. The agreement from Sharon to attend to discuss the possibilty is a good sign, we now just wait for a respone from the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

Egypt has often been at the lead in trying for Middle Eastern summits, I hope something postitive comes from this meeting.

Abbas to meet Sharon in Egypt

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has accepted an invitation to attend a summit in Egypt next week along with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, his spokesman said.

"We have agreed to attend the summit," Maher Chalabi told AFP on the phone from Turkey where Mr Abbas is currently visiting.

Sharon has already announced that he will attend the summit next Tuesday in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in what would be the first meeting between the most senior Israeli and Palestinian officials in more than four years.

Interesting, in that the Egyptians might be motivated by competition with any future iraqi government, or any other possible forward thinking middle eastern government, and has decided to use its position now to have the conference.

Egypt would be the natural place to have it tho, since they have an old peace treaty with Israel.
