UK babies may be genetically screened

Topic started on 25-6-2003 @ 09:09 AM by IronDragon

I have a strong feeling this is the first step to making the movie "Gattaca" come true... anyone with less than perfect genetic makeup will become the new "2nd class"...

Never mind compiling an illegal DNA database for the entire population...

The next step? Licensure for having babies???

Every child born in the UK could be genetically screened and the data stored to plan their future healthcare under government proposals for a massive expansion of genetic testing.

John Reid, the new Secretary of State for Health, said the UK was on the threshold of a revolution in healthcare. "Increasing understanding of genetics will bring more accurate diagnosis, more personalised prediction of risk, new gene-based drugs and therapies and better targeted prevention and treatment," he said.

The controversial proposal for testing newborn babies was announced in a White Paper that promised £50m to expand the ability of the NHS to cope with the rapid advance in genetic testing. It is likely to be studied by the Human Genetics Commission, the government advisory group, as well as the National Screening Committee before firm proposals are made on what diseases would be tested for.

Anyone read the book "The Godwhale" or "Half Past Human" by TJ Bass? Evolution reaches stalemate when humanity evolves into a 4 toed nebish, sterile, and cannot survive outside of the underground cities of 3 trillion people. Reproduction is directed by the Big Earth Society, and one had to be genetically modified in order to reproduce, and then never saw thier child....

Why do I see this coming?

The government is to spend £50m to bring the genetic revolution into the mainstream of the National Health Service - starting before birth, and tracking patients through youth and maturity.
The initiative will begin with wider antenatal screening. But soon babies could have their genetic profiles recorded at birth, to spell out their individual inherited risks of disease later in life.

This could lead to a new kind of "bespoke medicine", made possible by the completion of the human genome project with its 3bn-letter genetic code spelled out in DNA. "It will make an enormous difference to the way we deliver health care in this country," Tony Blair said. "It will also raise a whole series of ethical issues. There are tremendous opportunities, but some risks."
