Why are some threads wider than others?

A question for the board techies: Why is it that some threads that are posted, and all of the replies to that thread, seem to have a width of something like 132 columns instead of 80 columns (these numbers have been pulled from the nether regions)? This results in having to use the horizontal scroll bar on the bottom of the post to read the entire sentence. Is it something that the thread author has done? But how does this account for all the responses to be formatted the same way.

Here is an example of such a post, though I've seen similar formatting here many times.

Long URLs or big pictures posted directly to the post, usually.

Edit: or, in this case, improper use of the [ code ] tags. I'll fix that. *nods*
