Iraqi security forces arrested Sami Mohammed al-Jafi, aka Abu Omar al-Kurdi, a leading terrorist in Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's insurgent movement in Iraq. Kurdi confessed to participation in 75 percent of the car bombings in Baghdad since March 2003. The capture took place about a month ago but hasn't been made public until today.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi forces have captured one of al Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's top bomb-makers in Iraq, the prime minister's spokesman said Monday.

Sami Mohammed al-Jafi, known as Abu Omar al-Kurdi, is accused of being behind some 32 car bombings since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, it said.

Kurdi has been in Iraqi custody for over a month, but his capture was announced just a week before Iraq's landmark elections in which Prime Minister Iyad Allawi is running on a list that promises to bring security to beleaguered Iraqis.

This is fantastic news especially since it was the nascent Iraqi security forces who apprehended the suspect. Zarqawi is becoming more and more isolated as his top lieutenants are killed or captured by Iraqi and coalition forces. Hopefully this is sign of more good news to come.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - An al-Qaida lieutenant in custody in Iraq has confessed to masterminding most of the car bombings in Baghdad, including the bloody 2003 assault on the U.N. headquarters in the capital, authorities said Monday.

Sami Mohammed Ali Said al-Jaaf, also known as Abu Omar al-Kurdi, "confessed to building approximately 75 percent of the car bombs used in attacks in Baghdad" since the Iraq war began, according to the interim Iraqi prime minister's spokesman, Thaer al-Naqib.

A government statement said Al-Jaaf was taken into custody Jan. 15 and was responsible for 32 car bombings, including the bombing of the U.N. headquarters that killed the top U.N. envoy in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, and 21 other people.
