OzManHero and everyone, Here are three of my favorite first lines. Unfortunately, most of my book collection is
elsewhere ... these authors are all men ... I'd like to check my books by women authors for their first lines, but that will have to wait.
"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen" (George Orwell, 1984)
"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how
my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to
know the truth." (JD Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye)
"On December 1, 2012, I received my first communication from Edward Snowden, although I had no idea at the time that it was from him." (Glenn
Greenwald, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State)
All these authors have an immediacy in their writing. They enthrall the reader from the first page.
