A Japanese policy that allows Taiwanese citizens to travel waive visas, has drawn protests from the government of China. China objects because its citizens are required to have a visa prior to traveling to Japan. The visa waver will occur for a limited time, to coincide with a trade exposition.

TOKYO (AFP) - China has protested against a Japanese plan to waive visas for Taiwanese tourists visiting during the 2005 World Exposition to be held in central Japan, a news report said.

A high-ranking China National Tourist Office official told the Japanese transport minister that it was unacceptable for Japan to require visas for Chinese nationals while exempting Taiwanese tourists, the Yomiuri Shimbun said.

The protest was made when Transport Minister Kazuo Kitagawa visited China last week, the Yomiuri said.

Japanese ruling coalition lawmakers plan to submit a bill to waive visas for Taiwanese tourists during the Expo in Aichi Prefecture between March 25 and September 25, the newspaper said.

I wonder why the communist Chinese government (Not to be confused with the democratically elected Taiwanese government) are so worked up over such a limited program? Perhaps they worry that people are chipping away at their dubious claims to Taiwan and are fighting tooth and nail over everything. At any rate, the government of Japan is entitled to waive visas in this manner.

You know, and no disrespect to China, but their habitual whining and crying on everything and anything related to Taiwan, is growing bothersome and tiring.

Could someone puuullleeeezzze send them a box or two of Kleenex?

Ha-ha! It isn't going to stop and has gone on for the better part of the century... It was probably valid then but now it’s just all B.S. Just expect someone to make a move or something in the next few years...

I agree, the whining is getting so old.

In this case, Japan is perfectly justified in their actions. If Chinese are allowed to enter Japan without a visa, they will dissapear within seconds of arrival. This happens time and time again in Taiwan - people on these tour groups from China run the minute they are left unattended. I doubt many Taiwanese would be that desperate to flee their home country.Look for Japan and Taiwan to cozy up more in the future.
