Email alerts possible?

I leave my email open more than anything because I have to monitor that frequently. That being said, is there a way to get email alerts from ATS? If not, wouldn't it be nice if we could? I wonder how difficult that would be? Could there not be an option like that available like there are on so many other sites?

Almost all of the places I frequent they give this option, but I have never seen that here? If this option is available here would someone please instruct me how to achieve this?

Having email notifications can seriously cause problems in that in a good thread there will be loads of notifications going out soaking up bandwidth which costs ATS money so its a balancing act so perhaps one notification per hour but sods law says it would always be the wrong one.

Not all replies are directed to the OP. Why isn't it a problem for other sites? They do not seem to have a problem using bandwidth for those background pictures. I do not have a clue about how any of it works.
