Can you guess what they are? Shouldn't be to hard.

They come and go, they lead and follow, sideways glances, taking chances,
Some are short, some are small, some are fat, some are tall,
Shades of white, black and gray, here tomorrow, gone today,
Never do they speak a word, no songs to dance to or whispers to be heard;

Around the corner, behind the bend, over the hill and down by the end,
Until the very last breath we take, there they are, quake and shake,
No conscious decisions do they make, all they do is take and take,
Permission is granted without being asked, emotions are not tasked;

Swim with the fish, fly with the birds, run with animals in their herds,
Nothing can hide from their embrace, No offering is made of grace,
By the church, mosque or synagogue, Star of David or from the cross,
Sun and Moon are targets too, no way to make them shoo;

Try to outrun them, try to out gun them, all to no avail,
Ships and trains, trucks and cranes, even the weather vains can not hide,
Sarcastic and menacing, smiling and grimacing, smirking and snide,
Not a care in the world, not a peep of worry, all they do is hurry and scurry;

Fast or slow, all for show, rain or sleet or fog or snow, you can not stop them,
From angles they come, walking or running, crawling or skipping,
Backwards or forwards, away from or towards, while tripping or tipping,
No escape hatch, no paddles to row, no matter where you go, they lead you follow;

You lead they follow, on the mountain or by a cliff, standing or sitting stiff,
Shifty and nifty, nimble and lazy, bright or hazy, they find a way to exist every moment,
Buzz with the bees, sway with the trees, waking hours sniffing flowers,
Powers, showers and towers are at their will, no leather or lace or frill;

Fire is not immune, ice is part of the tune, musical instruments play and have nothing to say,
Nuclear war will not make them cease, only bombs will cause an increase, disease and deceased,
Burials in coffins or cremations in urns will cast more of them through all the turns,
Toss them out with the trash, back they come in a flash, thankfully there is no gash.

See told you, shadows would be correct in this instance. Remember that movie Ghost and the scene where all the shadows converge? Lately when I have been out walking, I have this strange feeling that shadow people are every where, waiting for me to join them, it is a very disconcerting feeling, like around the corner is something. I thought writing about it would help.

That reminds me of a creepy song in final destination. I cant remember the name and as it is the only thing that spooks me I wont look it up.

Good guess, but I had shadows in mind when I wrote this, I do not consider souls to be shades of gray, I see them as variations of light and the color spectrum.

Nope, you got it right the first try, I gave so many clues it would be really hard not to get shadows. I wasn't really trying hard to disguise them.
