A recent study suggests that drinking one twelve ounce glass of beer or one six ounce glass of wine per day might give older women an edge in cognitive abilities. Research included a survey which asked a group of nurses about their drinking habits and a test administered over the telephone to assess thinking skills. It was not determined if the effects are long-term and others point out that older, healthy adults might be more likely to drink moderately than their less healthy cohorts.

Women who enjoy a drink of beer or wine daily have sharper minds into old age than women who abstain, U.S. researchers reported on Wednesday.

The report, based on a study of nearly 12,500 nurses, adds to the apparent benefits of light to moderate drinking, which can also prevent heart disease and stroke.

"Our study suggests that moderate consumption might provide older women some cognitive benefits," said Dr. Francine Grodstein of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School (news - web sites) in Boston, who worked on the study.

Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine (news - web sites), Grodstein and colleagues said they found that drinkers aged 70 to 81 were 20 percent less likely to experience a decline in their thinking skills over a two-year period than women who did not drink at all.

On average, the women who quaffed a beer or a glass of wine each day tended to have the mental agility of someone a year and a half younger than abstainers.

It has long been recognized that moderate drinking improves cardio-vascular health, but this study goes further by suggesting that the benefits of alcohol consumption include brain function. Before you young ladies rush out to that next kegger, remember that alcohol abuse is related to a multitude of health risks and serious social and intra-psychic difficulties. Moderation would be the salient term here.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Alcohol is a blood thinner. As age progresses, it has been shown that cholesterol builds in the veins, capillaries(veins that are roughly the width of one cell), etc. and can eventually clot in some cases. Thus, the reason for heartattacks and strokes. It would stand to reason that the thinning of the blood would help offset the buildup, thus allowing oxygen and other nutrients to continue being ingested by the highest amount of cells - the brain is an intricate network of capillaries. of course moderation is the key, otherwise you are exposing valuable neurons to a highly toxitic substance which would negate the oygen/nutrient factor.
