Aircraft over Adelaide Aus. Engines above Fuselage?

I was walking through the city last week and noticed an aircraft coming in on an unusual approach.

They usually come in East / West form over the Hills or over the Sea in line with the runway.

This one came in from the South, pretty low, looked like an emergency services aircraft, White with a red stripe, looked like a short aircraft but pretty fat like a BAe 145 but it's wings were above the fuse, it did not look like a business jet. The weird thing was the engines were mounted above the fuselage between the wings and the tail (so not like a VC10 or similar).

It was low too, that's what got my attention, as it dissapeared behind the taller buildings and reappeared on a tight left turn into the approach flight path.

Any ideas?

Almost had to be an AN-72 or Be-200. There aren't many that size with that configuration.

Perhaps they are trying to sell a few to us for fire fighting.

Problem as always is they are too expensive if used for that single purpose.

Being Russian it is likely that our bush mechanics could fix it if it broke.

Could have been the BE-200 but it looked "fatter".

Im usually quite observant but perhaps the angle of its turn gave an optical illusion because I would say neither but like Zaphod said, there aren't many in that config.

No mention of a BE in Aus at the moment?

Wish I paid more attention now.

Just found it, Bombardier CL-600 or 604, can't post a picture but the colour and engine placement match, sorry I said they were above must have been the angle.

Seems like AMSA SAR bird.

They're going to build them in the US, and there is interest in getting them for Australia.

That was my first thought, but I don't think the fuselage is wide enough for what he described.

I was lucky enough to see one in Raleigh, NC several years ago.

Pretty sure it was an AMSA SAR bird heading to Cobham to have all the specialist SAR equipment fitted.

From the AMSA website www.amsa.gov.au...:

The first aircraft arrived in Australia in early January 2016. The majority of the equipment installation work will be undertaken at Cobham’s hangar at Adelaide Airport.
