The plane's manufacturers, Seabird Aviation, stress the military applications and the first two planes have been sold to the new Iraqi air force.

They are patrolling oil pipelines around the southern city of Basra.

"Most countries of the world today face a wide variety of threats. The best way to curtail these threats is from the sky, " reads some of the promotional material.

But Seabird Aviation chairman, Alec Mackenzie, says the aircraft has plenty of civilian uses as well.

"We believe there's a huge market for this aircraft for commercial operators," he says.

"Firstly for commercial surveillance - power line, pipelines - for the use by air traffic control, air traffic news reporting.

"But we do believe that the biggest markets today and the most urgent market appears to be that of military and security".

Slow, with high visability. Perfect observation platform.

Interesting and telling observation.

Someone asks about a new aircraft and one of the first responses is to talk about shooting it.

You guys were good at doing that with civilian airliners, so an observation plane should be no problem for you either.
