A U.S. commander in Afghanistan told reporters that Osama bin Laden may still be hiding in the country. Colonel Gary Cheek, who heads American forces in eastern Afghanistan, further indicated that the Taliban may be fragmenting. The threat from foreign fighters appeared to be minimal and confined to the rugged areas where Bin Laden is thought to be hiding.

KABUL (AP) - Osama bin Laden may be hiding in Afghanistan, while followers of the former ruling Taliban who once harbored the al-Qaida leader appear to be fragmenting, a U.S. commander said Monday.

Col. Gary Cheek, who heads American forces in eastern Afghanistan, told The Associated Press that bin Laden and other key militant leaders could be in the area, a swath of the country flanking the rugged Pakistani border. Cheek said the number of foreign fighters facing his forces was not significant and that most operated near the rugged Pakistani frontier, the zone most widely touted as a hiding place for bin Laden and his right-hand man, Ayman al-Zawahri.

The persistent attack on the infrastructure of the Taliban may be finally breaking them down. However, even if they lose total central control of their fighters the individual cells can still cause a lot of problems. From what we have seen in Afghanistan, the situation in Iraq is going o take a lot of time to resolve.

Well, he may be in Afghanistan, he MAY be in Pakistan, he MAY be in Tahiti or California. So much certainty, it's comforting. What is for certain, they DON'T KNOW where he is.

Heh Heh, pictured OBL in a speedo lying on a beach in Tahiti. At any rate as the global assult and man hunt continues, does he matter anymore? As his infrastructure is killed or captured, how good is the head without the body?

Is it really so strange to not know on which side of a lawless unregulated border one particular man may or may not be? afghanistan, waziristan, whats the difference? I mean, really, what is the difference? No one is in charge over there, he could easily be moving back and forth amoung the pashtuns.

Heck not too long ago the iranians were saying that he was in their country and they'd help to flush him out. Why would he be staying put in one country or the other?

Well, the problem is many cuckoos still wear him on their chest, especially in South East Asian Countries. Indonesia, Malaysia, hell even Singapore, about 2 years back, had a group of nut-cakes plan to attack and bomb American interests. They all had links with the guy in speedos and actual evidence was tendered to show that they had actually met him and received blessings and funding from him.
