They call it "personal celebrity." The 20-something girl in the video explains their selfie obsession as if the interviewer doesn't understand it. It's a hoot.

"It's become like, our own brand. What we do, what we wear, what we eat, where we live. what we do, and when we do it...."
Wow, thanks for the explanation, professor.

The cosmetic surgeon in the article said these people come in and consult with him about surgery so they can have better selfies.

Psychologist Sandy Hotchkiss said the boost has too many young people getting addicted to selfies.
“Our values lean toward the shallow end of the value pool where things like physical beauty and material success are more important than things like compassion, courage, and kindness,” she said.

There are some great comments under the article:

Where are they getting the money? I thought we were borderline great depression and all that. A depression might be healthy for us as far as getting our priorities and values back in order. Selfies while shucking broom corn would be good for the soul!

Darwinism will win out! I've seen several of these self-absorbed idiots, faces buried in their phones, walk into oncoming trucks, cars, bikes, walls (whaaaa that wall hit me). Natural selection is a wondrous thing!

I'm with this person. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Research about this

To examine the association between selfies and personality, Fox and Rooney used data from a nationally representative sample of 1,000 men between 18 and 40 years old.1 Participants completed personality questionnaires assessing the dark triad and self-objectification.

They were asked how many selfies they had taken and posted on social media in the last week, as well as how many other photos they had posted and how much time they spent on social media sites. They were also asked to rate how often they used various methods to make themselves look better in pictures, such as cropping, filtering, and re-touching.

Results showed that both narcissism and self-objectification were associated with spending more time on social networking sites, and with more photo-editing. Posting numerous selfies was related to both higher narcissism and psychopathy, controlling for the overall number of other types of photos posted. Machiavellianism was unrelated to photo behavior when taking these other variables into account.

Psychology today

I wonder what is called when its another way around. Interesting nevertheless.

Selfies with friends accepted and understandable, but ultimate self love..

The movies, the media, pornography, prostitution, and misogynistic men(players) have made these women feel like nothing but a sack of meat.

Our a society that has become obsessed with looks and sex. As long as we place more priority on the female body then the female mind many young women will act accordingly.

Materialistic and oversexed. This is a societal problem that has caused a staggering number of women to suffer from depression, feeling that they have no value to society. And an equally staggering number of men who believe monogamy means being unhappy and controlled.

HAHAHAHA like Millennials are the only self obsessed losers out there. I think every generation has its large group of vanity whores. Stop trying to act like this behavior is a new thing.

Actually, the levels they're taking it to IS a new thing. When I was in school, many, many years ago, the most self-absorbed egomaniacs wouldn't even come close to this new generation of self-obsessed narcissists.

In the Greek myth, Narcissus was in love with his own image. He couldn't stop looking at his reflection, his own image. That's quite literally what these selfie loons are doing. They're delusional.

I saw a very funny picture of a homely looking woman at a crosswalk wearing a shirt that said,

Go $@!% your selfie.

I want that shirt.
