GE has been performing CMC testing for the GE9X engine for the 777X program. The first phase of endurance testing has gone extremely well, which
bodes well for the efficiency goals for the aircraft.
Boeing plans for a 10% improvement in fuel consumption for the 777-9X. To do that GE has to increase temperatures and pressures in the engine to
higher than normal alloys can withstand.
Round one of testing included an unplanned hard surge during one of the tests. According to GE the CMCs withstood the surge perfectly, and suffered no
damage related to it.
