Killing a tree for Jesus

Every year many millions of various evergreens are cultivated to decorate
our homes for Christmas.

I often wonder how Jesus would feel about this tradition.

Something tells me that perhaps he would prefer that we plant a tree each year
to celebrate his birthday.

Each dollar we spend cold be used in some parts of the world to purchase 10 seedlings.
$40.00 = 400 seedlings

Many people also do not connect the fact that some people are quite allergic
to evergreens.
A cut tree still releases chemicals into the environment.
When that same tree is placed in the recirculated 72 degree environment
of the typical home, those chemicals tend to cause a marked increase in cold like symptoms around the holiday season.

He doesnt feel anything.

This used to bother me too until a tree farmer made the point that we actually waste many more valuable trees for the wrapping paper we just tear up and throw away. Most commercial firs, etc. come from farms now where they stagger grow trees just for the seasonal purpose, so it's not like a tree in the wild is lost. It's not. Just a tree farm gets harvested.

But still the real damage from the pagan tradition of Xmas trees is the disposal. It's a monumental task doing something with a city's trees come January.

People illegally dump them or throw them in dumpsters filling up landfills. Find an approved drop site if your town doesn't come mulch them on the curb, where it will be recycled. Home Depots in the south take them (or used to).

I've heard NOT to throw them in lakes despite the old wives tale of making homes for fish breeding. Sounds nice and all, but not when a dozen, hundred or thousand other people do the same thing.

Sometimes the disposed trees are used on the ocean shore lines to aid in beach erosion.

Imitation trees (with the fiber optic lights) are better IMO.
Take the cash you would have spent on a tree, and donate it to a good charity!

I'm an artificial tree fan. With about six strings of lights and lots of ornaments, who's to know the difference.

I don't have to deal with falling needles everywhere, a dry tree fire hazard, or needles pricking and irritating my skin as I undress the tree. No disposal problems, either.
This fake tree will last me at least 10 years.

Don't forget about Festivus. You can combine christmas and festivus and instead of using a christmas tree just use a metal pole!

We have no tree in our home, real or fake.

You make a very good point.


It seems that we have a deeply flawed need to somehow prove ourselves
worthy or respectful of God by spending untold billions on symbolic monuments
to our faith.

I've been buying the live leyland cypress trees for the past 7 years.
We plant them across the front of our property once we've used
them in the house for Christmas. You just have to make sure you
give them plenty of water while they're inside. The first one we
planted is about 14 foot tall now.

Another bit of food for thought, if it weren't for Christmas comapnies would have no reason to plant and maintain hundreds of thousands of pine/etc. trees each year.

I don't know of any research to that effect, but I would be surprised if there weren't more pine trees on the earth at any one point because of the demand for Christmas than if the tradition did not exist.

And considering Jesus was supposedly a carpenter - I'm sure he would be proud
