Jeeezz....this is so sad, when are we going to learn?....we need tighter laws worldwide on deforestation and projects that involve mass destruction of trees,we already no that this a global problem...what are we doing??....i know some projects must proceed but with better evaluation of proposed sites for felling and logging we might stand a chance of creating better awareness....its the beggining of the end.

James the lesser, and how many of those seedlings survive to maturity? Feeding deer, drought, erosion.
Dr Horacid, the reason that helped the forests burn was the excessive underbrush and growth. Clearcutting the mature stands does not address that problem.
Under natural conditions periodic fires burn the undergrowth out and leave the mature trees standing. This is the condition someone who cared about the forests would want them returned to.
Now instead of applying the correct solution of clearing enough of the undergrowth to create a semi-natural condition they are going to rip out and destroy the mature growth.
But cutting down all the mature forest does not create a natural condition.
Mostly when timber companies cut they clear-cut and rake the trees over the landscape destroying much of the vegetation that would hold the soil. Often when it rains the logged area turns into a complete mudslide. Filling up rivers where Salmon still spawn and wipe out another declining species in the process. Stripping away centuries of topsoil where a new forest might have otherwise re-grown.
Anyone who cares about the natural environment has to wish the most horrible things to happen to Bush and his 'R*pe the land for profit' supporters.
