Russia in First Step to Terror Law

A new antiterrorism law was proposed by allies of Russian president Putin as response to Beslan School siege. The new law might abuse peoples civil rights because it gives autorities 60 days security "clampdown" to any part of the country being suspected for incoming terrorist attack. The bill got an initial support from Russian Parliament.

The bill, initiated by parliamentary allies of President Vladimir Putin, was drawn up in light of the deadly Beslan school siege in September in which more than 330 hostages were killed, half of them children, after a Chechen rebel attack.

It foresees the imposition of "a state of terrorist danger" if authorities receive information -- even unconfirmed -- that suggests an attack is being planned.

During that period, even if no attack takes place, authorities could introduce emergency measures including banning public demonstrations, tapping phones, conducting spot street checks and restricting movements of people and traffic.

Critics of the bill, mainly from the communist opposition in parliament, say the emergency powers could be unscrupulously exploited to snuff out public protests and popular discontent at some stage in the future.

It looks like Russia is going to get their own "patriot act". I'm curious if Russian parliament will agree to approve it. And if how U.S government will react?

Yep, you are right Seekeroff we tend to look at the picture from one side... IMHO Russian "patriot act" is as dangerous as American - it shows that governments can strip peoples rights under excuse of terrorist danger... This proves that keeping nation in fear is "excellent" idea to proceed with plans for totalitarianism. If Russia passes its bill, I bet U.S. will follow.
