Indonesia' Foreign Minister Wirayuda has stated that Indonesia rejects Australia's proposed new maritime security zone citing that the concept is unworkable. Foreign Minister Wirayuda has also accused Canberra of United States-inspired unilateralism. Under Australia's proposed plan, all vessels entering within a 200 nautical mile limit of the Australian coast would be bound to provide details of all
activities.

Vessels coming within a 200 nautical mile limit of the Australian coast will also be required to give extra details on cargo, ports visited, location, course, speed and intended port of arrival.

The move is similar to steps taken by the US in dramatically raising standards of maritime security amid fears of terrorist attacks on ships.

Washington has called on its allies to introduce similar measures.

Mr Wirayuda said the zone touched Indonesian waters off Maluku and Sulawesi islands, as well as most of the Java sea.

Mr Hill, who is on a two-day visit to Indonesia, defended the move, saying it would allow Australian authorities to better monitor ships travelling to Australia.

Now freighters and the like do need to have their cargo screened when they dock, however i feel that the main reason behind this rebuke by Indonesia is poaching within Australian waters. "Shark fining" is rife along with many other fish species such as the Patagonian Toothfish. And any crew that is caught are taken before a magistrates court on Australian soil, given a token fine and promptly sent back to Indonesia. Not much of a deterrent in my opinion.

More control, more strangulation. Whatever the reason or excuse nations have territorial waters- beyond that no nation should have a right to force anyone to do anything. The Aussies are being led into 'testing' for the U.S.

What happens when a Chinese sub or trawler tells the Aussies to kiss off?

This comes at a time that the australians have "credible information" about possible terror atacks in Indonesia, looks like indonesia is gonna miss out on some aussie tourist money, unless offcoarse they play balll with the australian navy ??
