THE US has approached Foreign Minister Alexander Downer as a candidate to replace International Atomic Energy Agency head Mohamed ElBaradei.

But Mr Downer is believed to have refused to challenge Dr ElBaradei, who has headed the IAEA since 1997. The Bush administration now wants to remove the Egyptian diplomat from the UN body.

The effort to oust Dr ElBaradei over claims he was too soft on Iraq and Iran is outlined in yesterday's Washington Post, which claims US intelligence has been bugging his phone.

The Us has realised that the only way they and the UN will see eye to eye, is if the US puts puppets in the UN as well...

They tried to get rid of Annan, and now they want to put their pawn Downer in a prominent position.

Good on downer for refusing!
