Boeing plans new plane by 2030

Boeing has a new plane in the works to replace the 737 MAX by 2030. According to Boeing the fuselage will be a little larger, with new engines, but the basic shape will be the same as current designs. They also say that it will most likely be a composite fuselage.

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N) has sketched out plans to develop an all-new aircraft, with new engines and likely a composite structure, to replace its 737 MAX jetliner by 2030, Chief Executive Officer Jim McNerney said on Wednesday.

The airplane will be slightly larger than the 737 but its shape won't change dramatically from the current fuselage. The push for the new aircraft was being driven by competition from China and elsewhere, he said at an innovation summit.

"By 2030 we will have a new airplane," he said, adding there's "a good chance it will be a composite airplane."

"It will be slightly bigger, there will be new engines. The current look of the planes (shape) won’t change dramatically," McNerney said.

What happened to the BWB? I thought that was the way things were going. Have they not solved the pressurization issues?

The problem with the BWB is turning with passengers in it. A tube frame, the passengers on the outside are sitting on top of the center of rotation, so even a high angle turn the trays and passengers don't angle very far. With a BWB, the passengers are in the wings themselves, so even a fairly shallow turn, the passengers on the outside are going to have a hard time with anything on the trays, and are going to feel the turn far worse than other passengers. So they have to be able to make level turns, and slide around instead of banking.

Interesting. I haven't followed the BWB progress for a while. Last I heard they were having issues with pressurizing the space because it didn't have a circular cross-section, then they were thinking of having several tubular passenger compartments next to each other with hatches between. Maybe they could still use that design for military or cargo use.

They've said that it would be a great cargo aircraft. It could carry more cargo than a normal tube airframe, and it wouldn't be bothered by turns or anything like that.
