New photos of abused Iraqi prisoners found on a commercial photo-sharing website prompted The US military to lauch a criminal investigation. Some of the photos have date stamps suggesting them being taken around May 2003, making them some of the earliest evidence of prisoner abuse in Iraq. A reporter from the Associated Press found more than 40 pictures among hundreds posted from a woman who said her husband had brought them home after an Iraq tour of duty.

Associated Press-CORONADO, Calif. - The U.S. military has launched a criminal investigation into photographs that appear to show Navy SEALs in Iraq (news - web sites) sitting on hooded and handcuffed detainees, and photos of what appear to be bloodied prisoners, one with a gun to his head.

Some of the photos have date stamps suggesting they were taken in May 2003, which could make them the earliest evidence of possible abuse of prisoners in Iraq. The far more brutal practices photographed in Abu Ghraib prison occurred months later.

An Associated Press reporter found more than 40 of the pictures among hundreds in an album posted on a commercial photo-sharing Web site by a woman who said her husband brought them from Iraq after his tour of duty. It is unclear who took the pictures, which the Navy said it was investigating after the AP furnished copies to get comment for this story.

While these pictures aren't quite as radical as some of the ones taken in Abu Ghraib prison, the fact that they have such early date stamps lend more credence to accusations that the top brass may have known early on about the abuse. At least in this country we are trying to do something about it, and some of the Abu Ghraib prison incidents have already been brought to trial.

Hard to believe it's Navy Seals, though, some of our best, well-trained military elite. I can imagine though that after watching your buddy next to you die at the onslaught from these prisoners in the battlefield, the urge to do them very serious damage has got be staggering. In that sense I am surprised that this is all they did.
