Well, while the USA and the wannabe superpower, the one-party-dictatorship China, are trying to out-do each other, the sensible countries are doing other things.

Its not the instance of one satellite that scary, its the fact that they could have hundreds, being able to deploy a 'rod' anywhere in just minutes.
