They can't control the internet, the internet is the matrix its self aware and getting bigger, its skynet the future is here. Once the internet senses a threat from anyone it will shut them down and send an emp through their lines.

You clearly not only have no idea how the "internet" works or what "it" is, but also no understanding of technology at all.

Do explain how they would send an "emp down the lines".. This should be interesting..

So how exactly will this work? A company such as an Amazon will have to pay Comcast or ATT a fee in order to have faster load times than say a competitor? Will the end user then have to subscribe or enroll into specific web sites of choice similar to if I want HBO or Showtime?

The internet will just send the ping through the pipes and the emp will blow up your microwave through Starbuxs' WiFi.

I'm pretty sure she was being sarcastic

I have a feeling this isn't JUST about net neutrality. There is something deeper to this. Don't get me wrong, it's about net neutrality on the surface. However, once abolished there are other things that will be set in place. They just need to kill net neutrality first.

If it was sarcasm, then fair enough, but to be honest I don't think it was - there are some proper loons around these parts with even crazier ideas - one post was about the internet becoming aware and EMPing you, then another was about the internet being based on alien tech..neither had a hint of sarcasm (I'm a Brit - we live and breath the stuff!) or the traditional "/sarcasm" tag...

If they do kill internet neutrality, we can always create our own private internet via radio frequencies and leave the ISP's in the dust.

The ISP's are really no longer needed to offer an internet through a phone line or cable tv line. It can all be done for free via wireless if only the right equipment were in place.

Wouldn't that require FCC approval?

Just sayin.

a reply to: stumason Actually stumason I know a lot about technology I use to be a software analyst [snipped]

A big enough current can fry the semiconductor components in the electronic goods (such as cell phone), disintegrating it beyond repair. The E-bombs produce intense fluctuating electro magnetic pulses that can induce a massive current in almost any electrically conductive object (such as electric lines, telephone lines, metal pipes). These objects, acting as unintentional antennas, would pass the current spike on to the electrical components down the line (such as, a network of computers hooked up to phone lines), result in component burn outs. Most of times, the current would be big enough surge that it could burn out the semiconductor devices, fry batteries, melt wiring and even explode transformers.

You clearly like to attack women and I think that you like to get your frills by overpowering women, well let me tell you that you don't scare me and I will not let you walk over me or anyone else.

Er, what? Attacking women? Nope, I just don't like idiocy, no matter the sex. Nice try at smearing me, but it isn't going to fly.

Clearly you don't know anywhere near as much as you think, whereas I actually work in Telecoms in an engineering capacity and might know a thing or two about the equipment and network I am paid to maintain.

I know what an EMP is, however I was asking how this would be delivered via "the internet" - you have so far failed to explain this.

First of all, there is no such thing as "the internet".

Secondly, the bulk (if not all) of the core transmission equipment is optical in nature - you cannot send any kind of EMP down a fibre.

Thirdly, assuming that the "internet" exists, it is "self aware" and could send an EMP, how is it going to get to the end user?

Answer: it cannot, because you're going to wipe out all the transmission equipment between the source and the target. An EMP would be entirely indiscriminate and would only, at the end of the day, disable "the internet".

Not that it is possible to even do, even if the entire network was made of copper.

Like I said, please explain to me exactly how it could be done and I will tell you were you are wrong.

Where is the pulse sent from?

How does it get to the end user?

How does it pulse in the end users home?

a reply to: stumason Once the virus knows that its being attacked it can send an emp by using the energy that's going down the lines. Power generators are energy and they are also on a network so its not hard to infect it. Once you know how to control the flow of energy you can do anything.

a reply to: stumason This student can get free energy from powerlines so if he can do that he can also reverse the process and send an emp to the lines.

A German student has built an electromagnetic harvester that recharges an AA battery by soaking up ambient, environmental radiation. These harvesters can gather free electricity from just about anything, including overhead power lines, coffee machines, refrigerators, or even the emissions from your WiFi router or smartphone.

This might sound a bit like hocus-pocus pseudoscience, but the underlying science is actually surprisingly sound. We are, after all, just talking about wireless power transfer — just like the smartphones that are starting to ship with wireless charging tech, and the accompanying charging pads.

>sigh<

Once again, all you've done is provide a nice, fluffy outline without adequately explaining how it is even possible.

I am telling you, it isn't. In the first instance, it simply isn't possible to get the equipment to do what you're saying. Like I said, the bulk of the network is optical in nature. Even if it was possible for some AI virus to assume control of a mux or router in any network (which I doubt for several reasons), any attempt to draw enough power to send an EMP down "the line" would simply fry the card, or fry the PSU's, or worse yet, destroy the rectifiers in the rack and just disable the network.

How do you imagine the "internet" is built? What do you think the "internet" is? Where is this "virus" going to draw it's power from? How is it going to direct that power? I could go on...

This article offers a perspective of what this could mean down the road a ways...

The Verge

You get home, kick your shoes off, and plop down on the couch. It’s time for some TV. Unfortunately AT&T still doesn’t let you watch Netflix on your phone, and your New Phone isn’t compatible with your home router’s Wi-Fi chip, so you set it aside and turn on your computer. Fortunately you’re a member of the internet’s upper-class: the group of Americans with access to broadband at home. And like most people with cable internet, you live in Comcast Country.

There’s simply no better choice than Comcast. Because it’s the only choice.

Netflix is a lot more expensive than it used to be, and while you still don’t really want to buy cable TV, paying for internet is basically the same thing these days. Want to read ESPN, The New York Times, and a couple hundred other websites you don’t care about? There’s a package for that. Want to watch videos on YouTube or download music from iTunes? There’s a package for that, but you’re already paying too much for Netflix. The one thing you really miss is porn. There’s no package for that.

There’s an "unlimited" high-speed internet, but it sits behind a pearly gate: only big businesses and rich people buy it. And people who really like porn.

Everything is a portal these days. Facebook is a portal. Amazon is a portal. Yahoo is a portal. You even get a discount from Comcast if you use Facebook Start: a suite of Facebook apps that track everything you do online. Mark Zuckerberg has his own porn and it’s called your personal data. Comcast is happy to be your pimp as long as it takes a cut of the profits.

Everything in Comcast Country is fast. Yahoo is fast. Facebook is fast. You don’t know how much Rupert Murdoch paid for his fast lane, but it must be a lot: nothing loads as quickly as Fox News. Microsoft made a deal for its new console, so the Xbox lives in Comcast Country. You’d honestly rather play Killzone 7 than Titanfall: Black Ops, but PlayStation multiplayer costs extra. Everything outside of Comcast Country is slow, and you have to look at Comcast’s ads before you leave the border. But at least the ads don’t suck. Comcast knows everywhere you go on the internet, and it knows what you like. Yes, I do need a new bicycle, you think to yourself. But only from Amazon, not eBay. eBay is slow. Amazon is in Comcast Country.

I read this in George Carlin's voice for some reason.

That's not even remotely the same thing. All that is doing is using the EM field of an electrical current to drive another current in another conductor - it is called induction. It's not new and it's not that amazing.

However (I'll indulge you here) to induce enough energy into the "lines" to cause an EMP would require an enormous power supply with a huge EM field just to produce any current that could come close to blowing anything up.

Ok... Clearly we're going nowhere - now you're talking about an AI, somehow, harnessing a coronal mass ejection, somehow surviving the enormous and unregulated energy contained within, frying a target's household yet not obliterating itself (and the entire worlds power and comms networks) in the process.

I'm done
You're quite clearly stark raving mad.

The Internet is the most valuable piece of media we have ever seen, and is the only way to freely express our opinion with like-minded individuals. But with the internet, comes inherent risks and rewards.

We have all seen how the internet can be misused. With the anonymous hateful posts, the predatory nature of perverted people, email scams and viruses stealing banking and personal information, and the ability to take very private matters and make them public for the entire world to see FOREVER.

All the dangers of the internet are very real. I keep hearing the story of some girl who fell in love with a guy over Facebook, and he turned out to be one of the girls friends mother. This devastated and humiliated the poor girl into eventual suicide. As tragic of a story this is, it keeps being repeated and celebrity scum like Miley Cyrus have even commented on the story.

The negative sides of the internet, are severely outweighed by the positives. The freedom to share information with peers, without an invasive middle-man of censorship is one of the most important freedoms we have today.

I almost want to see Facebook fail, and people rise up and make some changes in our government. I am not advocating for violence, but for political action. Start holding the 3 branches of government accountable for their crimes against our humanity.

What will be the catalyst we need to start this revolution? When will we break our corporate chains and restore freedom and liberty to the common man? I hope soon, because I dont know how much longer I can take this.

I have to say, Rocker is right, the C.I.A. and the N.S.A. don't answer to anyone - in fact, I am highly convinced that the executive branch answers to them, and that congress isn't told anything they need to know. The judiciary branch - might have some sway on this, I keep on hearing about closed hearings and the like.

Congress could cut funding to the agencies if they ever got around to it.
