That's just mean, "Leave the grubs alone!!!" (in the voice of that "Leave Brittany alone!!!" guy)

How big are the pictures compared with the diameter of the whole tree? Interesting find.

I agree with the larvae idea. Google "tree galls" and there are different types of images that look similar to yours, although I couldn't find one that looks Exactly like yours.

Not sure where you live, but if you contact The Los Angeles County Arboretum, I'm positive they will tell you what that is. I would post contact information, but the last time I did that, I got into trouble with the MOD Squad 😁

Michigander. And thank you Lol and in my research I discovered this plant is used to make antibiotics for staph infection. Cool beans.

It looks like burl wood to me. Burl is like cancer for a tree, they're malignant growths caused by some type of stress. It usually grows on the trunk or root system but can also grow on branches.

Here's a picture of a branch burl someone has carved into a pipe.
