Could a society that used to be in the public eye become secret? Is it possible to be totally forgotten if they stopped doing activity or just concentrate on secret activities?

It is said that the Bavarian Illuminati were a 'public' society, and went 'secret' after some mishaps they encountered.

Its still debatable whether they exist today or not.
