collared by their heart shaped leaves

stick out by the hundreds

from muddy ponds

facing the shy morning sun

buffaloes grazing nearby

bathing in water

or gazing over rice fields

their daily work

bellies round and fat

glossy their dark skin

contrasting with bamboo

pointing in all directions
