Syria ... the next mess to get US in a war

Obama and company want you to think this will be a in and out hit on Syria, I think not!!!! For in the past we have done the "in and get out hits" that have lead us US to more war and long ones at that. It has giving the US a black eye in the worlds view.

As the Obama administration pushes Congress to authorize military intervention in Syria, a look back at other missile strikes and how they turned out.

President Barack Obama's national security team is trying to make the case to skeptical U.S. lawmakers for a limited strike against the Syrian government over its alleged use of chemical weapons on Aug. 21.

Following are details of missile strikes and other limited military action taken by the United States over the past 30 years and what transpired afterwards:

Lebanon 1983 — In September 1983, U.S. battleships anchored in the Mediterranean Sea off Lebanon shelled Syrian, Palestinian and Druze forces in the Shouf Mountains outside Beirut in support of the Lebanese army, during the complex civil war that began in 1975.

It was one of several actions that created a perception that the United States was taking sides in the war. A month later, Shi'ite Muslim suicide bombers blew up the U.S. Marine and French barracks in Beirut, killing 241 Marines and 58 French paratroopers. President Ronald Reagan pulled U.S forces out of Lebanon in February 1984. Lebanon's civil war raged on until 1990.

Libya 1986 — U.S. bomber aircraft struck sites in the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Benghazi, 10 days after the deadly bombing of West Berlin's LaBelle nightclub frequented by American soldiers, which Washington blamed on Libya. Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's adopted daughter was alleged to have been killed, and his sons were reported injured.

Libya was not linked to another major terrorist attack until the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed 259 passengers and crew and 11 people on the ground. Libyan Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, who denied involvement in downing the jet, was convicted of the bombing in a court in the Netherlands 2001. Gaddafi ruled Libya until his ouster in August 2011.

Afghanistan and Sudan 1998 — President Bill Clinton responded to al Qaeda's bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania with cruise missile strikes on al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan and the Al-Shifa pharmaceutical factory in Sudan. Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had lived in Khartoum in 1990s and U.S. intelligence believed the factory was producing chemical weapons. European diplomats later said the factory was a primary source of medicine in Sudan.

Analysts and historians say "Operation Infinite Reach" was interpreted by bin Laden, who reportedly joked that the attack killed only camels and chickens, as evidence the United States lacked the stomach for confrontation with his forces. In October 2000, the U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Cole was hit by an al Qaeda suicide attack while it refueled at port in Aden, Yemen, killing 17 American sailors. A year later, the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington killed nearly 3,000 people.

Iraq 1993, 1996 and 1998 — In 1993, Clinton ordered the firing of Tomahawk missiles against the headquarters of the Iraqi Intelligence Service in response to a failed Iraqi attempt to assassinate former U.S. President George H.W. Bush.

In 1996, U.S. cruise missiles hit air defense facilities in southern Iraq in retaliation for Iraq's attacks on minority Kurds and its challenges to no-fly zones authorized by U.N. Security Council resolution.

In 1998, a four-day U.S. and British bombing campaign named "Operation Desert Fox" hit Iraqi weapons research and storage facilities to retaliate for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's refusal to cooperate fully with U.N. weapons inspectors.

U.S. officials said the strikes jolted Hussein's hold on power, but he remained the leader of Iraq until he was ousted in the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

so we now say let the UN do it how and why ??? The UN is a do nothing group that can make Sanctions on a nation but then how to back it up and keep the peace when they can not! It is time for the world to make a strong stand on Nations that do not play by the rules, and a needed time for the US to say ENOUGH, we will no longer be the worlds police force!

If the world wants to make Syria pay for the use of WMD ie Chemical weapons then the world should make it their job to go in not the US Briton has said no Russia says yes if UN says so, France has had two faces on this.... one saying yes the other ...well not so fast. Yes the use of Chemicals weapons is awful an dyes the ones that used it them should be punished., world court.

IS this the job the US should do or not? A hit and run with missiles will not do anything but make the US a bigger bully and a bigger target, the world needs to say to the UN get some B@ll$ for once and enforce laws of the world with force if need be and if there was ever a need be this is one.

You might be right but the US did not start this Syria did, IT is the US to pick the ball the world dropped by inaction on Syria, Briton for once has the right idea.... we need to stay out of it.

Parliament for now appears split. Although no vote is scheduled following the debate, the government says it will only act as part of a international collective.

US seems to be standing alone, yet the world cry's for action.

Can America for once stay out of other countries business instead of diving in as if they are the worlds police. Thay are always at war with someone and about time they looked after their own people and used the money to make it a better place which it could be. No wonder Russia is getting annoyed as well. What if they started to do what America does all the time. Your President tried that when he was in Ireland to tell them what to do and no one listened and why should they? I'm glad the UK are staying out of it, used to be America told us to jump and we said, how high? Not any more.
America used gas in Vietnam plus other countries and look at the stockpile they have as well!
Too many countries are getting involved in this one way or another and what if America was bombed because of this?
Obama in my opinion is one of the worst presidents that have been in office in my opinion. I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth anymore. Look at the so called weapons of mass destruction in Iraq that was complete lies. Now they say because of some phone call confirming and who killed all those poor people over there ? Where is the proof it was Syria? What war has America actually won on their own?
They didn't want to join in on World war 2 until it was too late even when UK pleaded with them.
I am sick of America sticking their nose into other people's problems.

Report: Syria won't change position 'even if there is World War III'

Syria will not change its position “even if there is World War III,” its deputy foreign minister reportedly said Wednesday – even as activists claimed that another prominent member of the Assad regime had defected.

Faisal Muqdad insisted Syria’s government would counter any military action aimed at punishing the regime for the suspected use of chemical weapons, according to an interview with AFP cited by regional news outlet Al-Arabiya.

for what is being seen , once the US starts hitting Syria, this is going to get real ugly really fast.

It as if all involved want a WW3 to become "the war to end all wars". Obama has stated we the US will go it alone, by the actions and feelings of other nations this is becoming fact.

I realize that Obama is the president and the buck stops with him, so to speak, but some of us need to take off the blinders so that we can see that there are just as many if not more WarHawks on the Republican side. Anyone remember Iraq and Afghanistan? Take a look at who's voting for what and who's speaking out on Syria and what they are saying. We seem to be stuck in this look-what-the-other-party-is-doing-to-this-country rut. Open your eyes.

I was hoping this thread would be bigger by now, it seems as if all want war , or an action in Syria. the few that do have their eyes open are telling the death and the blind to open them eyes of theirs.

Something tells me the fears we all have of a major war are about to become real and fast, it will make WW2, Korea, Nam, and all the other actions/ wars look like a school yard quibble, WW1 will be the closest, know you mil history well? read up on WW1 and see the weapons and horrors that mankind created to end it.... the weapons we have now are child's play. the last 2 wars actions did no go to plan. More of a fight was intend, not the hit and run or IEDs we have faced Syria might be the woody the MIC has been looking waiting for, but then it could be the broken nose and two black eyes it gets instead.
