I personally think that the concern for protecting us against something we don't even know exists is a non-issue.

The people we poor humans let reach for power, grasp and wield it are all too often violent enough, and/or forced into allowing another expressive reinforcement through demonstration and action that the human species is the most aggressive animal this little corner or this remote tip of this arm of the galaxy.

We've supposedly sufficient concern enough among our own numbers to forever and constantly be at war somewhere, if only at times just behind the scenes in the development of new toys to employ against each other.

Should we ever encounter any alien species that poses any sort of even perceived threat in the traditional Hollywood invasion scenario sense, I'm fairly certain all the war "games" we've been playing just against each other over the last few thousand years will account for plenty practice and preparation in responding with whatever measures through devious sneaky guile and/or force to win out the day, if even only just barely.

As a result, we'd get alien tech from captured, downed, disabled, and abandoned positions where less than 50 years of recovery from such an event will be like the difference between WWII and now in quality of life, technical advancements, population recovery/booms, etc.
In such respects, getting attacked/invaded/annexed by aliens would be the best thing that's happened to humans since the clovis point, the wheel, the industrial revolution, the microchip.

From there, we could use the very same alien tech to get off this rock, possibly back-track to the aggressors and show them how it's done properly in putting them under subject, and so on until Humanity is effectively off the chain, footloose and well on it's way to building a galactic empire on par with any Science Fiction Galactic Spanning Space Opera.
