In the old days we did not neen no stink'n tree stand. We would wait, hanging from a branch over the deer trail with a knife held in our teeth and drop down onto the back of the deer, ride him a ways and then slit his throat.

A Centerville man was injured today after falling from a tree stand while hunting deer in Appanoose County, according to an Iowa Department of Natural Resources press release.

Blake A. Havard was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines where he was treated for bruises after he fell about 17 feet from his tree stand on a private property east of Centerville this morning, according to the press release.

Havard had a crossbow in his hand and then began to descend when he slipped on the first step of his ladder stand and fell to the ground where he landed on his backpack containing antlers and calls. He was not wearing a safety harness at the time he fell, the press release said.

“He was very lucky. He landed on his backpack and could have been impaled by the antlers,” said Megan Wisecup, supervisor of recreational safety for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

There have been three reported personal injury falls from tree stands so far this year, the press release said.

This might be the wrong story.... Iowa?

Heard on local radio from Indiapolis...

Oh well, probably happens all the time.

In Michigan they tell stories about people taking your deer away at the point of a gun if you get one that someone else wants.

Nuts out there in the woods these days.

Centerville... my hometown. I half expected to see the name of one of my cousins.

Not very surprised by the story. Game hunting is big around there and the people aren't known for being bright.

By the way, the radio station was probably from Mediapolis. It's one of the bigger towns around there.
