Lonewolf, I think keeping the monarchy would be a temporary thing, which pro-independence voters like myself don't want to get into right now for strategic reasons. That would just complicate the debate even more right now, and would potentially alienate those who believe in the monarchy.

I think you will find that a few years after independence, we will decide to get rid of the monarchy. Probably by voting that the current queen will be the last one. That would be a relatively tactful way of doing it, I think.

To be honest I don't have an opinion on the Monarchy personally. Sometimes I think they are a good thing and other times I think they are a waste of space.

I don't think my life would change at all either way.

The royals have a number of properties in Scotland such as Holyrood Palace in Edinbugh and Balmoral Castle in the Highlands and these attract a lot of visitors due to the royal connection. So they do bring in some revenue.

Prince Charles seems to like wearing the kilt whenever he can.

I think they like Scotland.

I don't even know where to begin with your contribution. It's hardly surprising that even older, conservative Scots are now recoiling in horror at the thought of continued union with England, such is the undiluted vitriol from south of the border, much like yours in fact.

Mr Cameron has no say in this. He's English, he represents an English seat in the lower house in the London parliament. What the Scots choose to vote for is entirely up to them, there's nothing whatever he can do about it. And that's the way it should be. People who wish independence have to be left to mull it over themselves.

And as the polls this week say, all this |English interference in recent weeks has merely strengthened the hand of the nationalists. There's now a slim majority for independence.

And like him or not, the newly released from jail Scottish socialist leader Tommy Sheridan commands MASSIVE support in the populous west of Scotland, and even further afield. He wants independence too.

So apart from ramming a bill through the London parliament to abolish the Scottish parliament, of course ... in which case there'll be blood in the streets ... there's nothing whatever Cameron can do about the question or questions or timing.

They have actually acknowledged that they love Scotland - Balmoral is by far the Queens favourite estate. This fact alone should make Scots feel proud! (in a weird, warped way ).

I think you would actual hold onto the Monarchy long term, ala Commonwealth nations.

Funny thing with the Jacobites isn't it? Most Scots (or any Brits) have no idea that it was actually the Tories that supported and funded this rebellion, wanting a return to British Monarchs rather than foreign monarchs. I bet if they had succeeded they would be more popular today north of the border!

If you do get independence though i think you should find yourselves a new leader. I just am not convinced by Salmond (and do not that in a confrontational way). I just think he is totally out of his depth - he actually surprised half the time you see him interviewed these days and i honestly think a new nation (which you would be) needs stronger leadership than that.

It would be cruel on him but then again look at what we (Britain) did to Churchill after the war. We are good at that - "well done, job done. Now if you wouldn't mind quietly shuffling off, don't let the door bang on the way out....."

I think you'll find that most of us have a fairly favourable impression of Salmond up here. His approval ratings are certainly way in advance of any of the UK's leading political leaders. In Scotland, he is so far more capable than any other politician it's actually embarrassing.

Even his political opponents will tell you that he may be the most astute political operator on these islands. I think his slightly self-satisfied aura winds up some but I actually quite admire it.

I think Iain McWhirter of the Sunday Herald quite recently said that not only do the opposition parties not have anyone of Salmond's calibre, but that the SNP had about half a dozen MSPs who were far more capable than anyone in the other parties - presumably Sturgeon, Swinney, Neil, Lochhead and MacAskill in addition to Alex.

Why you bother to be a member of this site when all you seem to do is trawl these boards posting anti-English bigotry is beyond me.

So you cherry pick one post from an Englishman and deem it representative of the views of all English despite there being a damn sight more posts which show a more concilliatory, reasoned and respectful tone.

Typical of a surrender monkey trying to stir up trouble between Scotland and England.

Perhaps a measure of how Cameron's interventions are viewed in Scotland....

It had been thought that Sunday's small poll carried out for the Sunday Express by Vision Critical had been flawed when it showed support for independence at 51% but perhaps it wasn't as far out as we think...

Today's larger poll carried out by Ipsos MORI showed voting intention amongst Scottish voters to be the following...

SNP 49%
Labour 23%
Conservative 13%
Lib Dems 10%
Green 3%
SSP 1%
Ind 1%

When you realise that the Greens, the SSP and the parliament's leading Independent (Margo MacDonald) all also support independence, that shows voting intention for parties supporting independence at 54%....

Just keep talking Dave and Salmond won't have to do anything!

Excellent news

We have a long way to go though. Almost everyday the msm are screaming reasons why it would all work out bad for Scotland ....... have yet to hear any positives .... I mean there must be some surely.

England are constantly groaning about Europe and how life is much better running their own affairs.

Much double speak methinks.
