News Report

A strong earthquake shook western Japan on Sunday. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake, which struck shortly after 19:00, had a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 and was centered some 10km beneath the ocean floor, 110km off the coast of the Kii peninsula.

The quake was felt most strongly in the cities of Nara and Wakayama on the Kii peninsula, which lies about 450km west of Tokyo. It made tall buildings in central Tokyo sway.

The Meteorological Agency warned that tsunami - huge waves triggered by seismic activity - could hit the coast of Wakayama and warned residents to stay inland.

Japan, which rests atop several tectonic plates, is among the world's most earthquake-prone countries.

A magnitude 6 quake can inflict widespread damage in a populated area.

I hope all the little Japanese people will be ok

Don't they get a Tsunami every so often?

I have edited out the "tsunami warning" statement in the title as the Tsunami Bulletin issued says there is no warning at this time. It only states that whenever there is an earthquake of this magnitude one could occur, but historical data shows there shouldn't be one.

looking

Sometimes it takes weeks to get the final magnitude. Note that EMSC is stating "6.8 may be under-estimated".

We'll update as they do.

There's nothing strange in earthquakes in Japan
There are often EQs there and they're prepared for them

Yes there have been 2 earthquakes, the second was a 7.3. I believe the first one was a 6.9. There was a Tsunami Warning. Tsunami's measuring 3 feet have already hit the Pacific coast.

abcnews.go.com
TOKYO (Reuters) - A second strong earthquake measuring 7.3 on the open-ended Richter scale hit western Japan on Sunday evening, just hours after the region was rocked by a similarly intense quake, public broadcaster NHK said.

The broadcaster said a tsunami measuring up to 1 meter (3 feet) may have already hit the Pacific coast.

The quake was felt just before midnight (1500 GMT).

Earlier in the evening, an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale hit western Japan on Sunday, setting off tsunami waves along the Pacific coast, but there were no reports of serious damage, NHK said.

Earthquakes are regular events in Japan, but how often does Japan get a 7.0? In California, for example, 7.0 earthquakes are rare; most earthquakes are in the 2.0 - 3.5 range...

Maybe the Aum cult have their weapon -

Aums singular interest in weapons of mass destruction - including sophisticated earthquake, weather and plasma weapons - were considered serious enough to launch a special investigation by the US Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Chaired by Senator Sam Nunn, the committee spent five months conducting hundreds of interviews of both government and private individuals.[iv] These included classified briefings from numerous US intelligence agencies. Their findings were published in an October 1995, 100 page report on the Aum cult.

Second Quake Hits Japan, Evacuations Ordered

"TOKYO (Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale shook western Japan on Sunday, the second strong quake to hit the area in five hours, forcing hundreds to evacuate as quake-generated tsunami waves approached.

Tsunamis measuring up to 35 inches hit some areas after the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a warning of potentially destructive waves of up to 6 feet.

All warnings were lifted just less than three hours later.

National broadcaster NHK said at least 28 people had been injured in the latest quake, which hit just before midnight.

Residents along the coast of Mie and Wakayama Prefectures were ordered to evacuate to higher ground to avoid the tsunamis -- water waves generated by seismic activity.

Five fishing boats were capsized in the port of Owase but there were no reports of injuries.

Television pictures showed residents leaving home, carrying children and belongings.

"The second one was bigger than the first," said a man who was sheltering in a school. "I was surprised. We'd suffered damage from tsunamis in the past so I decided to evacuate."

An official in Wakayama City said he saw what appeared to be a tidal wave 1 meter high surging up a river, NHK said"

Wasn't this in a fairly remore unpopulated area, though? It's not like there was a 7.4 quake under Tokyo - it was much further away, thankfully, and caused a lot less damage than it could have had the epicenter been in a more populated area.
