Have been suffering through a particularly slow Public WiFi connection, and started to notice the various urls that show up (since they hang so long, easy to spot them).

Was alarmed at seeing things like "ads.pubmatic" and "track.pubmatic.com"

Another BB & Q thread also mentioned a different sort of "ad loading" that was slowing down page loading and refresh....but seemed to be a different set of links?

What is going on? What sort of "tracking" cookies, or anything, are infesting the computer?

I don't think this is boding well.......what else goes on "behind the scene"?

We don't use Pubmatic, the computer you're using has been to a site that does and Pubmatic's cookie is in the cache. Clear the cache and you'll remove Pubmatic's cookie.

That being said, just about every ad on the internet places a cookie in your browser so they know you've seen the ad. It assigns a really long, unique number to your browser so that if you click on the ad, end up at the advertiser's site they know which ad sent you there. There is ZERO identifiable information and the "tracking" is not tracking you, it's tracking the cookie the ad placed in your browser cache.
