Love me or I'll punish you forever.

Sounds like the ultimate stalker boyfriend.

No thanks.

Not quite right. It's more like this. You have a ticking time bomb in your house and your favorite uncle knocks on the door. He tells you to get out of the house right away. He pleads with you because he loves you, but he will not force you to leave if you choose to stay.

When you refuse to leave, because he loves you so much, your kind uncle offers to cover himself over the bomb so that it will only harm him and so that you will be safe.

However in your pride and certainty that you are right, you tell your uncle to get lost. to leave you alone and you can handle this yourself.

Now whose fault is it when the bomb goes off and you are destroyed?
How will uncle react to your folly? Will he be glad you chose death over life?

I think that's a better analogy. Jesus loves you and died for you. God sends his only Son to die a horrible death on the cross. He does this because this is the only way he can satisfy the legal requirements of the law of sin and death, which he put into place at the foundation of the universe. To revoke this would require that he allow the devil and his angels to go free.

How must God respond to those who reject the sacrifice of God's son on the cross? The only legal way you can be reconciled to God?
