Methane Extinctions - Could this Explain the Carolina Bays?
See Dramatic video

Jun 2010 - The Permian-Triassic Extinction Event, the largest extinction in history, could have been caused by huge, worldwide methane explosions, says Dr. Gregory Ryskin, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Northwestern University

One barrel equals 160 litres. Trillions of barrels of methane snow crystals have leaked into the Gulf of Mexico since 20 April 2010 and will sublimate into methane gas bubbles at the rate of one litre of crystals forming 650 litres of gas. Over the next year enough methane is going to come to the surface in the Gulf of Mexico to produce something like as is reported about in the above video from the History Channel.

"Lately, I’ve heard many talking heads in the news media suggesting that the only way to stop the BP oil leak might be to detonate a nuclear bomb under the leak site. Before they consider that option, they might want to watch this video of Dr. Gregory Ryskin, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Northwestern University. In the video, Dr. Ryskin explains how a prehistoric methane gas explosion could explain the Permian-Triassic Extinction Event, a mysterious period in Earth history where 95% of all species went extinct. Given that the amount of methane gas that is leaking from the BP spill site is at least equal to the amount of oil, it would lead one to believe that there is a huge underground pocket of methane gas buried there. Now, if Dr. Ryskin’s theory is correct, not only would detonating a nuclear bomb near that underground methane pocket end the oil spill, it might end all life on Earth as well".

Assuming the leak in the Gulf of Mexico to be 12,000 barrels per day. It could be as much as 20,000 barrels per day or more. One barrel equals 160 litres. The amount of methane snow is four times more than the oil. So the arithmetic is as follows.

12,000 barrels of oil per day = 1,920,000 litres of oil per day.

To find the amount of methane snow leaking per day we multiply that by a factor of at least four.

1,920,000 x 4 = 7,680,000 litres of methane snow per day.

From 20 April 2010 until today 9 June 2010 is approximately 50 days of continuous spillage.

7,680,000 x 50 = 384,000,000 litres of methane snow crystals floating around in the water.

Each litre of methane snow crystals will sublimate into 650 litres of methane gas.

384,000,000 x 650 = 249,600,000,000 litres of methane gas.

Since the methane snow is coming out of the seabed over a wide area this is an out of control ongoing process that cannot be stopped.

250,000,000,000 litres of methane gas every 50 days ad infinitum.

I think we will be quite save.

As a gas it is flammable only over a narrow range of concentrations (5–15%) in air. Liquid methane does not burn unless subjected to high pressure (normally 4–5 atmospheres).

As a liquid it is quite difficult to get it burning in water. and as a gas there is more then enough air around to close the window it forms an explosion risk.

Potential health effects

Methane is not toxic; however, it is highly flammable and may form explosive mixtures with air. Methane is violently reactive with oxidizers, halogens, and some halogen-containing compounds. Methane is also an asphyxiant and may displace oxygen in an enclosed space. Asphyxia may result if the oxygen concentration is reduced to below 19.5% by displacement[citation needed]. The concentrations at which flammable or explosive mixtures form are much lower than the concentration at which asphyxiation risk is significant.

the Permian-Triassic Extinction Event, a mysterious period in Earth history where 95% of all species went extinct.

Hi

The suspect of the particular event you mention here is a mantle plume.
A flow of magma coming from deep within the Earth towards the surface.
This is called a flood basalt.

This flood basalt resulted in the creation of the Siberian traps.

Vast volumes of basaltic lava paved over a large expanse of primeval Siberia in a flood basalt event. Today the area covered is about 2 million km² – roughly equal to western Europe in land area – and estimates of the original coverage are as high as 7 million km². The original volume of lava is estimated to range from 1 to 4 million km³.[

Imagine 7.000.000 square mile. The event lasted for up to a million years.

A normal volcano can have an effect on the climate with only one big eruption.

As I recall the Siberian traps erupted for a million years and exausted so much gases the Earth atmosphere became deadly to breathe. Which killed almost all of the land animals except for a few that lived a subterranean life.

This atmosphere would also end up in the oceans by rain and rivers which killed most marine life. Scientists think it was not alone and something else could have happened at the same time. Like an asteroid impact.

It took life approximately 30.000.000 years to recover from the effects of this or these events.

While methane is not toxic it but it can replace air. This means it kills by sophistication.
It would probably blow urly near volcanic eruptions tho.
