Is it possible humans could develop gills?

Yes it's possible. All you need to do is to isolate a human population to a habitat that you transform slowly (over millions of years) to an aquatic one. Or maybe not. At least whales and seals and all the other aquatic mammals never "reverted" back to gills. I'm guessing it has something to do with all mammals being endotherms thus needing lots and lots of oxygen and water having relatively little dissolved oxygen and blablabla
