Im workin with someoen on a site and it seems to be down. We have pinged bothe the server and the ip address and it communicates with the server but the site still appears to be down what are the possible reasons for this?

A little more info, please?
What's the URL?
Has the hosting company been contacted?
Is the registry up to date (and all fees paid?)
Etc etc.

-B.

Possibly the DNS name does not resolve to the IP address yet.

Or is this a problem with FTP?

could you perhaps paste the errors you get when trying to access the site (and make sure to edit the pastes so as not to give out the address). First thought is that if you can ping it, then its something to do with the server itself rather than something inbetween. A check of firewall rules would be a good place to start, and also to see if the web server software is running and/or functioning properly.
