I think if you step back and look at history, there isn't any time in history when things aren't "building up" to some kind of big or bad thing happening. That's the way the world works. It's not static. Things advance, adjustments have to be made, and then a random thing happens and we all look back and say, "Well, obviously it was building up to this point." But that's just hindsight.
Yes, I hereby predict that something big and scary and unusual will happen one of these days, if it's not happening already. Because big, scary, unusual things happen every now and then. And a lot of people will point and say how obvious it was that it would happen. Some people will have even guessed what it was. It won't matter what it is.

Terence McKenna's Novelty Theory seems to be getting more and more relevant given the perceived 'build-up' many people are noticing.
Yes, throughout history, things have been building up, however with our advanced technology and quick media coverage, the acceleration has become both real and a bit exaggerated.
There is a coming quickening. Things cannot continue at the current pace. The entire process is becoming an unsustainable mess. Things must plateau, subside, or something will eventually break.
Unchecked acceleration and growth can either lead to a Technological Singularity, or utter catastrophe. Whatever the outcome, things will continue to get stranger. Have a look at the following:

Novelty Theory: en.wikipedia.org...
And I discuss my own theory on how the perceived build-up will reach critical mass here:

I'd challenge you to hunt down all the things that are good that are going on these days. They always get drowned out. But take your eye off the ball, bad things will come along that will affect you, so you'd best see it coming.
