George wins Dando murder retrial

Barry George has won his appeal against his conviction for the murder of BBC TV presenter Jill Dando in 1999.
The Court of Appeal decided the jury's guilty verdict six years ago was unsafe, and has ordered a retrial.

Two things I don't understand here - firstly, surely any amount of firearm discharge at all is improbable if the person in question has not fired a weapon. Secondly, surely the amount is no more minescule now than it was at the first trial - how can a "detail" like this possibly have been glossed over at a murder trial? How many other similar convictions ought to be looked at again if this one is so unreliable?
