BellSouth restoration status: Hurricane Katrina

Although we will use commercially reasonable efforts to provide updated information on a regular basis, this information will not be updated in real-time.

Today's Discussion Posted:September 02, 200510:00 a.m.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina’s destruction in the Gulf States region, BellSouth remains focused on employee safety and damage assessments. Emergency Preparedness teams have been seeking positive confirmations on each employee’s safety and well-being. Information is being provided hourly to BellSouth Security who is working with the appropriate authorities to provide a safe working environment for all personnel.

Damage assessment teams are building the support infrastructure which will be required to support what is expected to be a lengthy recovery period. Senior management officials from Network Services flew into Baton Rouge to establish an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) which will oversee the restoration of the network in the New Orleans area. Corporate Real Estate Services (CRES) has damage assessment teams deployed in the Gulf Region.

BellSouth’s EmergencyControlCenter continues to direct restoration and assist in resource needs for the affected areas. Security issues, due to looting and rioting, are limiting our ability to deploy our teams in New Orleans. As these issues are resolved we will continue to evaluate our plant conditions and make assessments of damage in the New Orleans area.

Survey teams are deploying to the affected areas in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Currently, 950 generators have been deployed to these states to restore service to DLC sites where commercial power has been lost. Specific Katrina restoration efforts will be reported as damage is assessed and restorations are made.

Additionally, BellSouth is deploying dedicated teams to restore service to the cellular network which has been severely damaged in the Gulf regions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

As commercial power is restored, a higher percentage of our outage reports can be attributed to the physical damage of the network.

Currently, 1.6 million customers are still affected by this event, as reports continue to come in this number could grow. The following is a list of the potential affected customers impacted by Hurricane Katrina to date.

Florida: 627,287
Louisiana 1,000,000
Mississippi 1,000,000
Alabama 475,000
Tennessee 475,000

Updates will be provided as information is available.
