thx sauron

but it's been sitting idle for quite some time [ I checked , it'll only go back to march ]

it had a new screen installed last june and has been a dust collector ever since
I got a cheapo laptop to use, while it was being repaired, but never went back to the repaired unit after I got it out of the shop , cept to update it with service pack 2 and couldn't connect then either....and I didn't have the time to putz with it, so it just sat...and I'd try defragging and window washing to get rid of the crap , get my ducks in a row , rebooted as well...and nothing so far has worked.

I have a replacement pc but I'd like to get this one updated and running, so when there r problems/system updates/reloading software etc , I can still get online to do whatever....

maybe I'll have to reload xp [ what a pain ] I got lots to copy to disc 1st if that is my last option...

Perhaps I would re-install the network card driver?

Sony Support Download PCG-GRX670 Intel® PRO100 VE Network Driver

It's too big to put on floppy, so you will need a usb pen drive or burn it to cd I suppose.

Or install the Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Adapter Driver Update Utility

Or walk thru Microsofts troubleshooting home networking.

Microsoft Support How to troubleshoot home networking in Windows XP

best of luck

Do you see a physical link light lit on either the card or the cable modem/router?

Hum, sometimes when I reinstall a network card driver, the authentication gets set by default to use a smart card for authentication.

I have to uncheck the box for "enable authentication for this network".
Perhaps that is the problem?

In addition you may want to check the advanced settings on the card. I usually make sure that the link speed is set to "auto detect".

I also usually make sure to manually enable netbios over tcpIP instead of using the default setting.

Also, this page may to help you make sure all your settings are correct.
Windows XP Network Setup

If none of that helps, you could go here and walk thru the ping, etc.
Troubleshoot Basic Connectivity

Best of luck
