The supreme body of the European Union, the Council of Europe, has sharply denounced human rights abuses and international law violations by the USA. Focussing on torture in Guantanamo and secret prison camps all over the world, the EU demanded an immediate halt of the illegal treatment of POWs.

Strasburg, Apr 26 (Prensa Latina) The Council of Europe demanded on Tuesday that the United States government put an end to the torture and inhuman confinement in its naval base in Guantanamo, a Cuban territory illegally occupied by the US.

In a unanimously approved document, the Commission on Judiciary Affairs and Human Rights accuses Washington of betraying its highest principles with its procedures on the base.

The report denounces cruel, inhumane treatment and pain inflicted on prisoners as well as the degrading legal limbo in which they are locked.

The council accuses the administration of George W. Bush of violating prisoner of war statutes, the right of jurisdictional control of the detentions and the right to a just judiciary process.

The accusations, with the collaboration of the International Committee of the Red Cross, among other organizations, include criticism of carrying out secret detentions in other states and transferring prisoners between foreign countries without official extradition request.

The head of the Russian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Konstantin Kosachyov, reminded the institution not to forget that the US military base in Guantanamo is occupied against the will of Cuban authorities.

The Council of Europe, the EU's top legislative body, is finally gearing up against the randomness and hypocrisy of Bush's "war on terror". Are the US's human rights abuses deepening the transatlantic rift ?

Seems like a good link to me. The people need to hear other countries and organizations like the Red Cross shed light on the hypocracy of our government. To this day you can hear our leaders talk about the human rights abuses of other countries as if were not guilty of the worst cases, ourselves.

The supreme body of the European Union, the Council of Europe

Thats not true. The Council of Europe is a separate and older entity than the Eu and has 46 member states not the EU's 25.

They are not related.
