SYDNEY, May 19 — A major 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck today in the Pacific Ocean southeast of New Caledonia, triggering a tsunami warning, US monitoring agencies said.

The quake was detected at a depth of 37 kilometres, the US Geological Service said.

“Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts within 1,000 kilometres of the earthquake epicentre,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said in a bulletin.

Tsunami waves of one-to-three metres above tide are possible along some coastal areas of Vanuatu, the Honolulu-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

It also warned of possible smaller tsunami waves of 0.3-1.0 metres in New Caledonia, Fiji, Kiribati and New Zealand.

A hotel receptionist in the New Caledonia capital Noumea told AFP she felt no shaking from the tremor.

A travel agent on the island of Ile des Pins on the eastern edge of the New Caledonia archipelago said she had not felt the tremor or heard any evacuation warning.

"Everybody is still on the beach and in the restaurants," she said.

Well, we've beginning warning for a year now to prepare. I even thought/heard the govt. in Tokyo wants to relocate. Personally, I think they should. It really is a death trap. One has got to have a scooter or a bike to get out of that place in 20 minutes. Hopeless to be in a car.

That’s why it is always important to have an escape plan no matter where you are or what you’re doing whether it be in case of natural disaster or a man made one…

I have a weird feeling the time spanning the three days prior to as well as three after June 3 could give us something we haven’t seen in a long time if ever…

I would not be surprised to see it deeply affect the east coast of the United States as well even though it won’t originate from there…

I follow DutchSinse regularly. He predicted this 7.7 a couple of days ago. He has been watching and analyzing earthquakes around the planet for about 12 years. He has a pretty good understanding of the waves of energy that move along the tectonic plates.

He is warning Japan for one in the lower 7 range within the next 7 to 10 days.

Years ago ATS had a few people here that would stay on top of earthquakes and knew so much about them, they always posted the best reports.

A couple of them died… some of the others got tired of the ridicule and went away… while still others just got bored of it and moved onto other stuff…

Realistically speaking even if it was announced on every MSM site and channel that a 11.0 was about to slide California into the ocean most people’s reaction would be “meh” and they’d go off to place a sports bet… chug a beer… and dip over to Pornhub… so it really for the most part does feel pointless…

Nah… not yet anyway… but possibly something large enough to inundate coastal cities with large waves similar to when they were pounding the Atlantic from above several years ago that allowed for ridiculous surfing in spots that rarely see anything more than a foot or two even during things like Hurricane Sandy…
