Gail Halvorsen , famed "Candy Bomber" of Berlin Airlift dies at 101

Col Gail Halvorson USAF (Ret) has died at age of 101.. Halvorson achieved fame as the "Candy Bomber" , who during the 1948 -49 Berlin Airlift ,dropped candy to children waiting outside the airport. Halvorson used his own candy ration and fashioned parachutes from handkerchief to drop them to the children. His crew helped him by pooling their candy rations. When word of Halvorson activities got out, citizens and candy manufacturers donated
candy to the airlift effort under name of "Little Vittles" Children would write to "Unkle Waggly Wings" telling them where they would be to receive
their gifts
